Genealogy. Is there a government site where I can research parts of my Family Tree.?

I know that I have some distant cousins in Australia and would like to find out more about my great aunts and uncles who went to Australia, but I don’t know if the Australian government has an equivalent to “Scotland’s People” which is run by the Scottish Records Office. Could someone please advise me.
