How to find if there is anyone with the surname “Marlin” in new Zealand?

Hi, well i have been successful enough to find some info on my dead grandfather including two photoes held at the Australian national archives etc..now i need to find a way to see if we have any family in New Zealand as i have also found out he was born in Timaru new Zealand. Those genealogy sites are complex to me and usually require payment is there any other way? i have contacted the births death and marriages of New Zealand via email to try and see if there is a birth certificate there with more details. I still would like a short cut to see if there are any Marlins there that may be related to us somehow. ANY IDEAS ? OR DOES ANYONE KNOW ALOT ABOUT THESE GENEOLGY SITES AND CAN HELP ME?
