Best Ancestry/Genealogy Information?
I am looking for the best website or even other ways of obtaining family history for a family tree I am creating. We want to go back as far as possible. If you could suggest some free sites as well that would be appreciated too. We are willing to pay for information too, but we are stumped on what is reliable and has the most information. Births, places of births, deaths, obituaries, and marriages are the biggest things we are looking for. Please help?
Most public libraries have a subscription to a genealogy site and all you need is a library card.
They also have access to Census records. If they do not own the Census reel(s) you need, you will be charged a rental fee and the library will only have it for a short amount of time.
A fee is charged for copying documents and there is usually a time limit on the computers and microfilm/microfiche machines.
Ancestry.com offers a free 14 day trial, after that you will have to pay for access to Census, birth, death, military records, etc.
US Deluxe:
Annual subscription, $155.40
Monthly, $19.95
Quarterly, $50.85
A one year subscription to any genealogy site is cheaper than a 4 day week-end of researching in my dads hometown, which is 4 hours away.
I save the price of a motel (3 nights), food, the wear & tear on my car, the price of gasoline and the kennel fee ($15.00 per day).
I can research on my computer any time of the day or night, in my “granny gown”, without driving anywhere to do it.
And, no one will tell me I have to leave because the library is closing.
Thru my subscription, I have made contact with several distant relatives. We have collaberated on various searches, correcting mistakes, verifying names, dates and places, which enabled us to find our correct ancestors.
Basically, there is no way for you to create a family tree, beyond 4 generations, for free. At some point, it will cost $$$$.
Ancestry also owns Genealogy.com (paid subscription) and rootsweb.com (a free Q&A forum).
Familysearch.org is free and is owned by the LDS. You will need a blank CD to store your tree as they do not offer on-line storage. Simply register and follow the easy instructions.
Good luck; hope you find who your looking for.
