The genealogy supplies that you will need to research and record your family’s history may include forms, charts, maps, CDs and software. Some software packages include everything that you need to record your family’s history digitally and do most of your research online. Here’s a little information to help you get started. You actually have two workable trees, one on your father’s side of the family and the other on your mother’s. The first step is to decide which branch of your tree you would like to research first.
It’s much easier to start with a single surname, work backwards until that branch of the family is exhausted, and then work on the other branch, if you decide to do that. Trying to work all branches at the same time is possible with today’s software. But, it gets confusing and you can easily lose track of your goals, whatever they may be.
If you hired a genealogy researcher, he or she would make copies of the “evidence” supporting the gathered names and dates. For example, copies of marriage, birth or death certificates would be included in the package the researcher delivered to you. You can also make copies of these items if you like. You won’t need specific genealogy supplies to access some of them. You just might need to take a trip.
If you visit the records department of a county seat, you are allowed to make copies of them. If you want, you can scan the items and store them online after you get home. You can also order copies of some records online, by faxing the required information to the city or county government offices.
Census records are other sources of information for anyone interested in their family’s history. Many census records have been or are in the process of being digitized. In some cases, you must pay to view the records, but some software packages include census data CDs and other information, such as immigration records.
At one time, you had to buy all of those different genealogy supplies separately. You also needed to be able to travel around the world to make copies and get the necessary information. Today, most of what you want to know has been stored in some database, somewhere. You may be able to access it online.
Once you have completed four or more generations, you will want a chart to display your findings. There are a number of different designs to choose from. You will find the charts for sale at websites providing genealogy supplies. Some software packages include them, too. Some charts are specifically for recording an individual’s descendants. Those are referred to as descendant trees. Other charts are referred to as pedigree charts. They are used to record an individual’s ancestors.
You can find the origin of many common surnames just by doing a simple online search. Some software packages include information about origins, family crests, coats of arms and other “fun facts”. With the latest genealogy supplies, you can trace your roots and display your findings. Let’s help future generations by doing the hard work for them.
