I remember visiting the industrial museum in Bradford, West Yorkshire, when he was about 10 or 11. It was a school trip. I remember going to the factory and see the looms and the thought …. What does this have to do with me? Bradford was one of the great actors of the industrial revolution and could not understand what was meant for people of my generation. I was young … What more can I say?
Years later, while conducting my own research family history, I discovered that the largest percentage of my ancestors worked in factories Bradford similar to what had been shown. In the census of 1901, three of the sisters of my great-grandmother worked as spinners of yarn. If I had known then what I know now … I would say show me what they did, what were as conditions, hours, wages. Did my great great always work in the factories, before she was a cook in Busby department store? I do not know because I did not ask.

Shortly before he died my father had a conversation with one of my brothers along the lines of: "Oh, you know I have always had a fascination with steam engines? "Several phone calls later it was established that none of us knew. I know that from 5 years old, my father was put on the steam train in Torquay, Devon by his parents (the train guard was asked to keep an eye on him) and was received by his grandparents in Bradford, it was here that his fascination for steam locomotives is due to? I'll never know.
My kids (hopefully you know what interests I) have shown interest only vague in their family histories. That's not something I care, because I think that young people are too busy living life to really have a concept of descent. I hope that one day he will pause and ask "What are my roots?" "Where I Come From?" I hope I'm still around to answer the same questions I have asked, but left it too late to do so, but if not then I know that access to all the research I did on my roots Devon farm workers, the manufacturer 3x chair my grandfather in Worksop, my 2x great grandfather coal mining in Nottinghamshire and Durham and all other ordinary members, but fascinating in our tree tree.
