How far back in ones DNA can they trace different ethnic origins in ones bloodline?

The original question was asked by amberwaves251.

So, I reposted the question in relation to my needs. “I am too late to post an answer, but what I really want is to ask your posting expert about my employer’s family genealogy. The family that I work for, China’s Imperial family, has Chinese, Manchurian, Mongolian, Hebrew (from Eber), Iranian (from Medai), Japhethic blood runing through their veins. Can this be established by DNA test?”

Two, anyone interested in speaking to the Imperial family or learning about their history?

Mitochondrial DNA can be traced from the mother’s line all the way to the root. Scientists that have tried have identified 3 unique line of mothers for all of the population worldwide.
