Technology provides us with innumerable opportunities; especially nowadays, in these most modern of times when we are furnished with commodities like high speed satellite internet, digital cameras, web cams, social networks and four wheel drive, among other things. One of the most recent hobbies or pastimes or dedications, depending on how gung ho you are, to become popular recently is genealogy.

People are getting down with their ancestry. They’re tracing their bloodlines back to colonial times, back to the old country, back to eras when life was a lot less hectic, but still troubling, in its own way. It’s actually a fascinating hobby. Some people are able to go farther back than you could imagine. Others are discovering dark family secrets, previously unknown heritages, and even new members of their family.

It used to be that doing genealogical research was rather difficult. You had to go down to the civil registrar or the town hall to pore through old records. Often, people would go to their local churches or parishes to sift through baptism and marriage certificates, as most churches tend to keep extremely detailed records of these kinds of things, going far back.

It was time consuming to say the least. You’d have to dedicate a fair amount of your free time to the pursuit. However, today, with the arrival of high speed satellite internet, the game has changed quite a bit. You do still have to check out actual archives, at least on occasion, but now you can find a whole lot of information on the net. All you need is a good, reliable and fast connection.

There are hundreds, even thousands of web pages dedicated to genealogy. People who have spent decades researching their family trees post information and share it with others. There are even social networks which connect members, allowing them to share information, post pictures and reveal tips and tricks.

Some sites do require that you pay, but not all of them (and those that do usually have a wealth of resources that will save you a lot of time).

Ancestry.com is the leading site out there. It offers reference materials, how to articles and general information. You can use parts of it for free, however, for a more in depth look, you do need to pay.

MyHeritage.com is a more of a social community. It connects people looking to build a network. Often users will find that they have ancestors in common. This site is free to use.

OneGreatFamily.com is a site for sharing your family tree and comparing it with the family trees of others.
