Three warnings:
1) Don’t expect to find yourself, your parents or even your grandparents, if they are living. Most genealogists hide details of living people. It will take time, too. See (3).
2) Free sites are supported by advertising. You can’t watch the Superbowl without seeing an advertisement for Budweiser, and you can’t surf the net for dead ancestors without seeing an advertisement for Ancestry. Don’t get upset.
3) At least one YA user thought I was holding out on him. He wanted a site that would let him enter his name, then give him his family tree back 12 generations, complete with coat of arms for each family. The Internet helps, but it isn’t magic.
