genealogy how to start
How do I start finding my family genealogy?

I have fooled around online trying to find out more about my parents, parents (immigrants from Scotland and Ireland) but it seemed confusing and difficult to start. Where is a place for a beginner to start? Is it worth hiring someone to do this. I am retired and have plenty of time if that's all you need.

First talk to the entire family and start to draw the information you find, this will also give an idea of where the gaps in knowledge and some possible dates for the beginning Search. It is much easier if you get over the hurdle last 100 years, including censuses are conducted by the public for 100 years after collection. This is to ensure that when information is released will not disclose any confidential information about living people, however, makes things more difficult for the researcher, if not already know this. If you get stuck in the first hundred years, can start looking for births marriages and deaths and local councils and parish records (although some opt for this that may not contain all the details). This is where the family tree and has written may come in useful, to suggest dates and names to start looking at concrete "evidence. A website is very useful as www.ancestry.com for listing available census and birth marriages and deaths, although the physical location where you are looking for may be more or less well transcribed, is a small pot luck as to which. http://www.familysearch.org Another site also has information is transcribed which dates back to 1100 (i have found, perhaps sooner). Also local control and records of the church in person if you can find information so often is not on the web, or even have been transcribed incorrectly, causing some confusion. As for the census shows that the addresses of people living in living in a household, and how they related, ages and jobs and occupations. Cross-reference this information with births and deaths, marriages, perhaps the contemporary newspaper articles and gather information. Can seem confusing at first but the shapes or research references and soon become clear, and can also be very addictive :-)
