How do I find out if someone has really died? Searching for father…?
My boyfriend never knew his father. When he was about a year old, his mother left his father (they were never married either). He has his fathers Social sec. # and i typed it into a few different death index (they are all ancestry.com, rootsweb.com/genealogy websites) It came up that he passed away in 1999 in pennsylvania… his last name was actually spelt slightly different than my boyfriends’ so now we are all confused and trying to find answers
anyone have any advice on this?? are these sorts of sites reliable? how can we find out for sure ?
spelled* not spelt, i am making up new words!
guess it proves the entire point of human error especially with typing-
and yes, the difference in the name is the lack of an (unnecessary) “a” within it
Yes, they are reliable.
Not 100 percent; maybe 99.999 percent. Data is [given by | entered by | transcribed by] humans who are . . . human.
How you make sure is to find an obituary, SSN Application or death certificate, and compare the other facts – birth date/place, father’s name, mother’s name, occupation, survivors – with what you know.
I see slight spelling variations on the SSDI all the time;
Clark/Clarke
Katherine/Catherine/Kathryn
John Wesley Smith/ Wesley John Smith/JW Smith
