Can the search for ancestors with genealogy software?

My boyfriend is very interested in genealogy and want to make a gift Christmas for genealogy. If you buy genealogy software as a legacy, will it be able to search for ancestors? Or genealogy program is just one way organize family trees? Besides, what is a good genealogy search site that I could buy a subscription to it? Thanks for any help.

Free genealogy is a great way to organize people and data. I picked up my family history (s) in a software program, tree tree, about 15 years and was very happy with it, I still have on my desktop. Now, I subscribe to ancestry.com, a paid site to obtain access to the census, birth, death, marriage and military records and to other subscribers of the trees. Still supported by my results each week, as a precaution. free sites: http://www.familysearch.org is a great site for a beginner to become familiar with the collection and recording. They also have free to print graphics and shapes that can be used to create a written record of the data collected from family members, cemeteries, family Bibles, etc, before the organization at the site on-line. http://www.rootsweb.com is an open forum Q & A owned by ancestry.com. http://www. is Free findagrave.com and may have some bio information. Paid sites: http://www.ancestry.com will cost $ 159.40 a year. http://www.genealogy.com is $ 199.00 per year and is owned of their ancestors. If you give your boyfriend a subscription to a paid site, no need for additional genealogy program. Even if you decide not to renew the subscription, CD can create a GEDCOM format before the expiry date and use it with most trusted sites and especially familysearch.org. Tell him to be careful, may be the genealogy Addicting!
