Kentucky Marriages Genealogy

Can you help me find my ancestors?

Today I found out from my great aunt that my great great grandmother was a McCoy(The famous McCoys who feuded with the Hatfields who live in Kentucky). She married a man who’s last name was Richards and that is my last name. I’ve tried looking on Google and all I find is something about a man named Richard McCoy. I was wondering if any of you are descendants or if you knew any good websites with a McCoy family tree or a genealogy site that would be good or if you knew a site with a list of marriage records of Kentucky from the early 1900′s to the 1930′s or 40′s.

Do you know your great-great grandmother’s first name? According to a family tree on Rootsweb (see link below), there was an Opal McCoy who married a Mr. Richards. Opal was a great-granddaughter of Asa Harmon “Harm” McCoy, whose murder in 1865 sparked the famous feud.

The person who uploaded this tree didn’t know Mr. Richards’ first name, and unfortunately, there aren’t any online marriage records for Kentucky for the time that this Opal McCoy would have married. You could try contacting the Pike County, KY courthouse and see if they have a marriage record for Opal McCoy to a Richards…

But we’re breaking all the rules of genealogy here. As the others have said, you really need to start with yourself and work your way back, one generations at a time: parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and so on. Verify each person and make sure you have the right parents for them. That’s the only way to be sure that your family tree is accurate. When you get back to your great-great grandpa Richards – when you know his first name, where he lived, etc. – you can look for his marriage record and see which McCoy he married. Then you can trace her family and find your connection.

If you need help, just post another question and include what you know for sure about your grandparents and great grandparents. Then someone can give you some suggestions on where to look for records.
