What is the best way/resources to do genealogy in New York City?

I’m trying to find the hometown of my Italian family that lived in NYC from 1882ish to 1940. What kinds of records are available that would have required a person to list their hometown on it?

Immigration documents, Naturalization applications, ships passenger lists..all of these should have the persons hometown on them. New York’s Library systems has a great genealogy department and you should be able to find lots of information about you ancestor. They should also have Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest to use while in the library and with a library card you can use Heritage Quest at home.

Other websites to try are the LDS site at www.FamilySearch.org and the One-Step Pages by Stephen P. Morse at: http://www.stevemorse.org/index.html
