Is it likely that relates to this person?

I was doing genealogical research and found a person with original spelling the name of my grandfather. This person is like my grandfather. I see the resemblance in the pictures. Does this mean that this relationship is closer than I think? Is true that despite being closely related and have a different spelling of surname related to me? Is that enough evidence is very strong resemblance. Now I know there are look alikes but this person was born in the same area as my grandfather. I know this person, but with similar can be said to be a cousin? The reason I ask, because it is well known. I tried to contact him, but he was busy. A friend of his father from his living in New York and we had a branch of the family New York. Our name can be expressed in different ways and is not common, like Smith. Any ideas?

the resemblance is not enough to claim as a cousin. It's further proof that makes it possible or even probable … the same surname, and in the same locality. And no, a slight variation in spelling is common in the 1800s. Many Sometimes you find the various branches of the same ancestor, finished with variations. Do whatever you can to document their own line, and siblings in each generation. A "trick" with a rare surname is using the death rate of social security (rootsweb.com, under the search), but the search advanced. Pull up everyone with that name by both the county and state, which will give some people to work. For example, you can find the dates of death for GR grandfather's brother, had not thought to be working. You may be able to pull obituaries for them, which may include living persons (maybe this guy). Once which has more solid names and dates to link to genetic resources grandparent, you can send a letter of this type, including those. I have found to do this type of contact (which I call the call "cold") .. if I show that I have legitimate information and willing to share, people are more likely responding. Tell him you found the striking resemblance, and this is what we have documented. good luck
