Who are David J Mill’s parents and ancestors?

David J. Mills
Parents: Unknown

In that era, the best clues come from the names of the children. It’s very common for the first two sons to be named after their grandfathers and the first 2 daughters after their grandmothers. Of course, if one of them died young and you’ve not found records on him, that might make it hard, but it at least gives you something to work with in your search.

One of the shortcomings to the 1820 census is that it only listed the head of household by name. If your David’s parents were living with his parents, that poses a problem. Not insurmountable, but it makes us look at collateral records, like others born with the same surname in the same place at the right time. Then we research them until we find parents and can pull land and probate records to prove lineage to your David.

I don’t know which township they’d have lived in, but I did find the following from the 1820 census, and it was just a month after the baby’s birth so it should be a good place to work from.

Enoch, John, Joseph, Robert and Mary Mills were the heads of households in Chester Twp. Enoch, Robert and Mary all lived next door to each other.

Daniel, Benbin and James lived in Richland Twp.

Joseph in Clark Twp

Thomas, William and William all lived in Vernon Twp.

Daniel lived the closest to Sabina. The other 2 seem to be in more distant parts of the county.
I found 2 David Mills on familysearch.org who were the right age and in the right state. Of course that doesn’t make proof, but again it gives you info to work with in the search.
The first did have a son named David b. appx 1823, but ironically his marriage was a month after your David’s calculated birthdate:

More looking left me with a Daniel Mills born in Sabina, Clinton, OH in 1835. His father was Abner C. Mills. So it’s possible that your David was Daniel’s brother.

Another Daniel born in the right place and time was:

If you pull this man’s pension records, you can prove if he’s your David or not. It would also give you a concrete date of birth (I’m not big on calculated dates…they tend to be off here and there just enough to make it hard to find the right person).

I also wouldn’t overlook Mary Mills from the 1820 Census. She may well be the grandmother of David.

I don’t know if you’ve pulled the marriage records for David and Charity, but I’d do that quickly. Don’t just look for a marriage license (which may or may not exist), but also look for a church record of the marriage. They should list the names of the parents in the marriage records.

Finally, has anyone pulled a death certificate, land records or probate records from Clinton County? These are all very valuable. If you or anyone in the family is still in the area, a few hours spent going through Probate Court records could be very valuable.
