Have you researched the genealogy of his family?
I am looking for advice on where is the best place to start. Where do you go first? And where has the best success? Is there an online program / website that really worked for you?
First, get a program to organize, I started with the free program www.familysearch.org, available http://www.ldscatalog.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10151&storeId=10151&categoryId=14000&langId=-1&cg1 = & CG2 = & G3 = & CG4 = & CG5 =. Return often, and often print results if you can. If you have a Mac, the programs are more expensive, so start with the paper first, then see if you want invest, I have a $ 99.00 program for the Mac, called Reunion, and am very happy with it. I began my research, basically, talking with my family, watching through Bibles, documents, etc that my parents had, and my aunts had. That can be difficult if you're in another state or country, however. Best Places to start free online are http://www.cyndislist.com/, this is the best browser where to find information based on the type of information, wealth, research councils, and so on! The next place I went was www.familysearch.org, and which is also free. This file is the LDS. You can also go in person to research LDS, but you may be asked to join his church. I would not buy a subscription to ancestry until you have exhausted the free sites, as the descent is more than 200 a year, or you can do month to month. One idea would be to wait until I have time after completing most of the research and a month of intensive research www.ancestry.com and then cancel until more information. , I find myself switching between www.familysearch.org, several resources Cyndi's List, and www.ancestry.com. The thing is, I found the most success in www.ancestry.com, can make connections with family members there, and also have begun a study of DNA connection. Especially useful are records: social security death index, usually containing the date of birth and month and year death and census data (before 1930). The last thing most people have told me they can not do until you are retired, is taking some trips the offices of county records. Check your local library for books on the subject for some more tips, but Cyndi's List is quite extensive. Good hunting lucky!
