Trace Genealogy

I need advice tracing my genealogy?

I’m about to begin tracing my mom’s genealogy. All we really know is that she’s Native American, we she knows from her parents (I’d go to them but they’re no longer living, Otherwise this would be considerably easier)

I’d just like to know where to start, and stuff like that.
Any advice is appreciated.
Thank you.
We can’t afford an extra non-necessity subscription, as my father is out of a job and my mom barely makes enough to pay the bills.

Assuming that you’ve visited http://www.familysearch.org and downloaded PAF, you should also check for name and location similarities.

Study any tutorials regarding genealogical research. There are usually terrific books available at public libraries. Genealogy is methodology, not the act of just finding or collecting names. The more you know about methods, the more time you will save, and the less snipe hunts you’ll waste time with.

Native American genealogical research is often a specialty at some point. Check out http://www.cyndislist.com and click on the appropriate section.

Also, see if there’s a local genealogical society in your town. Membership is cheap and some of these people are highly experienced. A very good site for advice is also http://www.tedpack.org . He’s a snarky Yamster, but his site covers all the basics, and I understand he’s supposedly devilishly good looking.

Good luck in your endeavor.
